Bartók's early second piano quintet (the first one is lost) is a very fine work, even if the language is more reminiscent of that of Brahms, Liszt or Dohnanyi than his own later style - although there are certainly touches of originality and preechoes of his later style (mostly so in the finale, although the folk touches here are Gipsy rather than Hungarian)/5(8).

Jul 31,  · There's been some recent posting on Kodály which prompted me to start this thread. I started listening to Bartók in my teens and also side-stepped a few times to listen to what Kodály had to offer. it didn't grab me and I decided back then there was no reason to listen to Kodály when there is Bartók.

The first two works are both dubbed serenades, Ernst von Dohnanyi's from and Zoltan Kodaly's from , both for three string players. The final work is Bela Bartok's famous Sonata for 2 pianos and percussion (), for an entirely different set of instruments, in a much more abstract, adventurous style.5/5(2).
